The Get Wets: Count this as the pleasant surprise of the night for me, as I had not experienced the barely controlled mayhem that is a Get Wets show prior to this. Even on a chilly evening playing outdoors the Get Wets were decked out in nothing more than red swim trunks and white T-shirts, making for a memorable visual as well. Garagey and fun, they get bonus points for the Free Times references dropped into one of their party anthems just for this occasion.

A garage-rock band without a guitarist is like, well, a garage band with no guitar. And yet these local trashcan Sinatras aren’t missing a single string. What they lack in the treble gets amply compensated on the low end. Theirs is a bottomed-out blitzkrieg of King Khan skiffle and Link Wray surf. Art Bar in autumn might be a tad bit nipply for their patented trunks ‘n’ flops, but once the nips o’ whiskey get swallowed, methinks frontman Jim Stark will have stripped to his skivvies in record time. Pace yourself, though. The Get Wets’ jangly rhythm ‘n’ booze is indeed a slippery slope.

I had quit holdin' my breath back when Hunter passed, cuz any hope of his novel seein' the light of film projector flicker would be nada or at good odds a projectile piece of over produced poo without his oversight...but here we are...goes to show, keep hope alive baby:

...& it's no mystery of the Mary Celeste that I dig Thompson and one of my fave rave fiction works is his early swing, the Rum Diary...so a movin' picture adaption of his narrative revolvin' 'round a journalist makin' ends meet in a tropical time & place speaks to my heartbeat...what I can skim from the film's trailer does make me a lil giddy, assumin' they haven't completely bastardized the thing with what they're holdin' back from us here in these 2 & a half finely edited minutes...With Depp doin' what he does as protagonist Paul Kemp (or Hunter incarnate as it were) this should be a wild lil ride...I fer one will definitely be buyin' the ticket once this flick arrives...

Shannon & the Clams - Sleep Talk

I rarely do the new-album-anticipation, ants-in-my-pants dance, but ever since I saw Shannon & the Clams last year in Athens, GA I've been sweatin' & shakin' at the notion...now the platter is out & I'm goin' bananas!

Sleep Talk could be a sleeper to the less that sophisticated slop'n'bop listener & honestly I snoozed thru my first spin, but now I'm wide wake & this record has thee shake! Clams fans are usta ruff'n'tumble doo-wop meets girl group meets surf-punk sound of their prior spinners and this dinger keeps ringin' that bell, but dare I say in a slightly sweeter way, baby...so if I Wanna Go Home was the party disaster platter, this new LP must be the after-shingdig soirée...not as much rambunctious but still a few rollickin' numbers ("the Cult Song", "King of the Sea") shuffled into a mix of mid-tempo boppers ("Baby Don't Do It", "Done With You")...I really dig the emphasis on girl group wallop, which is what really cuts this beat combo more than a notch above the in-crowd, natch...while the title cut just kills me, my stand-out may be "Oh Louie" due to the intentional (?) send-up to the legacy of prior Louies (do I really need to yak anymore about that!?!)

I don't think I can describe in dribble here how much I dig this band and this record will be on deck fer the foreseeable tropical future...ya need this sucker on yer hi-fi, like yesterday baby...& if ya ain't singin' along by the time the needle hits the end-of-record hiss, get yer ears checked kids!

An attempt to explain this wild wave of low-tide surf-pop

There seems to be a sonic scene springin' forth that sings to my sound canals...Now I'm aware we drift the lonely ocean of the post-modern genre conga and am dip-hip enuf to cruise the dare I say "chill-wave" shores, but as the tide rolls back on this low-key, laid back beat fer the scenester-sect I can hear something new floatin' in the wake--a real relaxed pop sound owin' it's weight in seawater to surf rock...it's got that reverb quality, baby!...tropical, even...let's call it "chill-surf", shall we skipper?
(sorta a dirty shame "chill-wave" was already took)

Even though it's just barely warm this lil' tape makes me wanna go Summertime ape!...yes, I said tape, unga-bunga...Orange Iguanas have cut to the juvenile core of great garage-pop on this six-song-slap...whispers of K Records songsmithery can almost be heard in a sonic-crush between Smith Westerns and the Epsilons...& bonus bops to this band's vocal group (take note everybody!), once we all start singin' along the song just sounds all the sweeter...the a-side makes this cat go a wee wilder than the flip but this cassette is a pure cruisin'-to-stay-cool soundtrack...gimme the heat and the beat, baby!

And just when this man thought garagepunk was a goner, I hear a Mid-West heartbeat from Trent Fox & the Tenants...They got that filty'n'fun thing down baby, with snotty songs on a party platter made to shatter yer shimmy pretentions!
A very Black Lips-friendly sound, yet a bit more focused on the meat'n'potatoes subject matter & music of us sore losers...the a-side of this seven-incher sets the record straight with some traditional slop pop...the b-side gets a bit more adventurous but still socks ya with a wallop...5 frenzied songs in all!

Wheels On Fire - Cherry Bomb EP

Wheels On Fire was born to make garage-pop greatness...I knew it when "Bad Lie" blasted beautifully outta my hi-fi many months ago...And now I'm greeted with this fiery short-play record from that band from the other Athens (technically the other, other)...A bit raunchier to my eardrum-dum-dums but with tunes like three-pronged fishhooks...there's an element of frenzy just beneath the surface of these songs that will sing to ya...Can we start callin' this the new sound of power pop? Oh Jimmy, did that jibberish of a genre label just come out...yes, indeed!

So what ya get to hear here is the explosion of three finely sparked sonic gems plus a "late night" demo that all goes ka-boom, baby...all sticky sweet like nitroglycerin...I can see what Jack O. sees in them (cuz honey, the lead vocalist comes from the same school of singin' as Mr. Oblivian) and the organ work is knockin' on orgasmic...think a softer sexier Marked Men with plenty of Elvis Costello and Big Star sprinkled all over...not all the way gloriously-zombifyin' yet life-affirmin' like the "Bad Lie" 7-inch but baby if it got any closer it'd be on top of it!

Cocktail Commotion: the Rum Summer

There's something curious, something captivatin', something down right cool about a crazy spirituous concoction...that's what all this commotion is about, baby...My soirees into dipsomaniac delight and drinks that I just plain dig...so on with the openin' act:

It's no secret that I'm pretty hip to the Hunter S.-lifestyle (that's a reference to the Doctor of Gonzo, ya dig) and all the wild ways of this world that the man and the myth revealed to me in his writin'...mostly his magnificent, semi-fictional send-up of life as an American journalist in the glory-days of loco Puerto Rico (& my obligatory summer read), the Rum Diary. To truly feel the scene I make it a point to relax it up with the relief of some of my own rum-yum action...something as sweet as the season, something I call the Rum Summer!

Here's how it shakes, baby:

- Light Rum of choice (I'm kinda partial to Ron Rico...watchin' the wallet, 'natch)
- real-deal Sweet Tea (i.e. not tea that ya shot up with sugar...it's gotta be brewed with sugar baby)
- fresh Lemon Juice

Get yerself an easy-breezy rocks glass (with plenty o' rocks...yer frozen aqua cubes fer the uninitiated) and toss in one part rum and one part sweet tea...give it a swirl & a dash of the lovely lemon juice...let the summer fun set sail...this beaut of a beverage can kick ya into gear and bring ya to the edge of the Fear...I'm sure Hunter would be proud...

Wow, the wildness just keeps whirlin' around fer the Get Wets...
If yer hip ya already know that Logan (aka DB) has rejoined the loopy group on the organs and we're gearin' up fer our fourth live, graceless get-down in Cola-town (which also happens to be our second show underground, at el Whig)...
& to slop the pops with a cherry on top, we are rarin' & darin' to drop some of our soul magic to the magnetic-tape in July (prepare yer hearin'-pipes, humanity!!)
...Like Wow, indubitably.

And on the flipside of the 45, wanted to beep everybody to the blast I had with my cohort in slop'n'bop crime (Ms. Anna) at the Milestone Club in Queen City, NC...
It was in fact the rare and rabid sightin' of the beast they call Nobunny!!!
But to get good & primed we were treated to the primitive and peppy poundin's of Pinche Gringo ...man can he (with some help from his friends) really go-go, baby!
Even tried to make a deal with the Mr. Gringo to get him and the gang back down Columbi-Yeah's way fer some acción salvaje! Keep those fingers-flossed, kids!

Then like the Muppets gone mad, Nobunny & his hairy horde took the audience on a boppin' and bonkers rollick through the great rock'n'roll wilderness...I bopped a lil too much (my neck still ain't forgiven me), but boy was it ever a ball!

Nobunny himself swiped my very lighter to ignite the on-stage pyro...& I wasn't even expectin' special effects!! ...this kid gives the great shakes and lets the party people know punky pop still has a place in this weirdo world! Another group ya just gotta see live in a dive (nothin' knockin' the anti-glam of the Milestone, baby)...take it if ya can make it, kids...y'all can thank me later.

& yeah, I also saw a few songs by the salient Spits, but there was just too much smoke, choke and meatheaded-maulin' fer my taste...but altogether a real wild time worth the ride across the border.

Just stumbled upon this killer diller of a radio program on the wild WUSC on a sufferin' Sunday nite...But wang-dang-doodie did Will the Thrill (who hosts this wondrous show) brighten it up with the main course: nothin' but thee creme of 50's and 60's r'n'r platters...super stoked to hear somebody still preachin' the joys (like many moons ago on Rock'N'Roll Radio)...y'all need to dig!

A Real Live Wire: Dexter Romweber Duo at the White Mule

Riled like a rabid bastard, it needs to be said...Dexter Romweber is a living legend...not that I ever had my doubts, but he forever forged his legacy in my mind last nite...

...Dexter, with older sis Sara in perfect tandem, just wailed and weeped fer over an hour at the White Mule...with few in attendance but the diehards for Dex's brand of "hardcore Americana" (to quote Exene Cervenka's glibness), it was fight or fuck time conveyed via his own brand of patented tunes that croon, swoon, & blast-off like a rocket to the moon...

...this is American music goddammit & the Dex Romweber Duo ain't gonna let it die off like some obscure historical fad...Dexter is a trash-rock troubadour, who plays from the soul of all those who influenced him...& Dexter's a big influence on me, continually preachin' his passion in wild shows of emotions and music...& the chain is unbroken, baby...

...& just like Kerouac, the only musicians fer me are the ones "mad to live" and if ya ever doubt Dexter & his ability to communicate those fundamental American desires and dreads, do yerself a favor and catch the 'Duo in action...ya couldn't be disappointed...

First 4 Trouble Makin' Singles from Trouble In Mind Records

First off let me say I love singles...& by singles I mean those tunes that jump outta the speakers and slap ya so silly & simply in the ears that they leave a permanent mark! And seriously, what better format fer said singles than the shit-hot sound of seven-inch spinnin' records, kids.

So, when I heard that Bill & Lisa Roe (of CoCoComa fame) had in a whirlwind started a garage record label with a wild, wishful premise I was all ears...and the premise ya ask: "every band's take on the two-and-a-half-minute pop song." (direct from Lisa's larynx, at least on good word from this Chicago Reader article)

Now garage-pop...hmm...that term can go so many ways schizophrenics would have a field day, and from all I've heard the bands on Bill & Lisa's Trouble In Mind records so far have had nuthin' but goddamn frolickin' fun! What follows is my ruinous reviews of the first 4 platters they've put out...and inspired by Lisa's lovely record label lay of the land, I'm gonna keep each blatherin' to a two-and-a-half-sentence tirade:

	CoCoComa - TIM001 The a-side, "Ask, Don't Tell" is a frantic, 'fuck-you' dancer fer the kids with plenty of that trademark CoCoComa ferociousness...the flip ("the Anchor") is pretty catchy too and keeps remindin' me of a dippy Richard Hell-style dirge fer some inexplicable reason...killer kick-off fer their label!
	the White Wires - TIM002 Easily thee most poppy of all the 7 inchers here & both sides about my fav subject: girls..."Pretty Girl" grabs ya by the balls and hops all around while if we turn her over "Goodbye Girl" is the best send-off song, full of perfect garage-pop vox and hooks...snag it now, slaggers!
	the Fresh & Onlys - TIM003 Being how psychedelic their sound is it's my least liked, but growin' on me like a magic mushroom..."Laughter is Contagious" goes far-out like an Electric Prunes pounder and backwards we find the "Horrible Door" which sets the stage fer a delirious dream on speed...crazy, man!
	Sonic Chicken 4 - TIM005 A couple of great garage-slop stompers leadin' off with "Surf on a Plane", with it's wild tempo change-ups and organ work...on the b-side we get smashed by "Crushed" in all it's Black Lip-sy glory...can't stop spinnin' this 'un, sickos! Git it!

Ifin' ya noticed we're missin' TIM004 here ...where'd it go...I wants to know! All in all, these first 4 singles should all be on yer wishlist, but don't take my word fer it...get yerself this wild wax right here!

Gots to say if Trouble In Mind keeps puttin' out quality singles such as these my bank account is gonna be in trouble fer sure! Dig it!

& let me say this was a real shocker surprise, kids...the story goes that no shows were to be had fer the intrepid 'Topless boys in the entirety of the state of SC...therefore last Thursday had been chalked up as a rest day fer the Mondo maniacs...but lo, a last ditch power-play of phones calls earned the band a gig at the Whig...all be it an un-payed gig...& as sheer testament to immutable enthusiasm & the triumph of bad taste the restless locals of Cola-town were treated to some terrific tunage...

Mondo Topless wasn't even discouraged by the jerry-rigged PA system or botched last-minute promotion of the show neither...but with a hard row to hoe they put on a raucous show...once again I was glad there's folks that still know how to get with it, turn it all out, & let the band know they dig it with their undulatin'...count yerself lucky if ya were there as I doubt ya ever gonna see another spontaneous garage-freakout like this again at the Whig or anywhere else on this rock fer quite a while, baby...

Addin' to the frantic fire fer me, the boys took my requests even, in addition to a totaled, yet never tired encore fer a sweaty but small crowd...there were sparks in the air, kids...thank the lord no one lit a match! Sam (lead singer and organ-grinder fer the band) commented after the show just how wild it was to have an audience manhandle his Jaguar with so much love and abandon...but in the moment of a great garage show us down South, starved fer sleazy sounds, can't help but get involved in the insanity...'course it also don't hurt to have the spring board of just-fun musical mayhem that Mondo Topless seems to make so effortlessly...in a perfect world playin' a shakey shindig under these conditions, pro bono, should earn these cats from Philly plenty of positive garagepunk golden stars.....I know that I owe 'em some gas money at least

What are the odds: Two GaragePunk shows at the Whig in a week?!?
First was Davila 666 (read all about it here), but not to be out-frenzied or forgotten, thee Fine Lines showed up to do the Whig right & up tight with plenty of Sunday nite shakes...

Once we sauntered down the stairs to the depths of Cola-town's hot spot, it smelled of the foul fun had just days earlier...but my garage gland was givin' off the real reek once I noticed that the groop of gentlemen scarfin' pizza were the 'Lines in the flesh...
So yes, I admit, I'm a fuckin' fanboy fer this raunch & racket...and with the G.C.S.P.S. gang providin' a pleasant trashy music backdrop, I plopped down and commenced with talkin' shop...garagepunk prattle at max spazz...Jason Fine Line, being the unfortunate soul closest to me, got the real brunt of my babble...tho over the course of the nite they all humored me...just nice guys who happen to play some of the sweaty sounds....this is dance music, kids!

Once again up front is the place to be...thee Fine Lines lay it out, baby...Before the show I got to squeeze in a few requests and even tho the band hadn't rehearsed any of 'em lately, they just wailed on 'em...Best part to me was at kick-off when durin' "sound check" they performed my fav rave tune, "Got to Get Out of This Town"...and this manic masterpiece just set the tone at full tilt, the way I always want it--wild:

Folks who label the 'Lines as a throw-back groop ain't seen and heard the frenzy live and that's a fuckin' shame, cuz they come to roll ya over...too pop fer punk, too savage fer sixties rock.
...They shook it out and gave a stunnin' encore fer the ragged audience, makin' sure the rocks got out! ...Capped the nite right with a congratulatory round o' shots and an open invite to come back whenever...now that's a garagepunk show!

UPDATE: How the fuck could I forget that I threw my fuckin' back out from this show?!? ...3 days later, still achy, baby ....no can say I don't get down to the garagepunk sound....

A Real Live Wire: Davila 666 destroys the Whig

Almost too tired to type, yet I ain't been this keyed up in long while, baby...it's all Davila 666's fault...& that's a good thing.

Just a-chuggin' along on their "Latin Lingo for Rats & Gringos" tour, after much wheelin' and dealin', the Davila boys squeezed good ol' Cola-town into their travels...& I'd like to imagine it was win-win, nuclear-devastation-style fun had by all!

What started as certainly a tame scene, even with rockin' sounds provided by locals, the Thirsties
was only to erupt into near-riot garagepunk chaos & great shakes with just the very first tune blasted out by Davila 666...all of this ace music unchecked by what could be a language barrier (Davila 666 is from Puerto Rico and sing their songs in Spanish to boot) proves that real rock'n'roll still communicates...& the message?: "Let's have some goddamn fun!"
...I wish I could elaborate on the nuances of their killer performance...six crazed mofos jangle-punkin' their way thru hooky song after harmonic song...how do ya describe a great party with justice? They have two damn tambourines goin' all nuts in the middle of the trad-garagepunk stew, fer fuck sake! My kinda sound, kids! So course I was up front in full tilt garagepunk-get-down mode and fun was overflowin' into the audience...
(One of the proudest moments was after the show, when multiple members of the band complimented to me on the crowd at the Whig fer dancin', not standin', as Davila 666 was accustomed to from other American audiences...that's right, Cola-town comes to party & shake all nite...take that, well, every-fuckin'-where else!) ...It was even Sir Charles' birthday too, so the dranks never ran dry and the wildness only got wilder...got to hear all my fav tunes (with the minor disappointment of no "Bla Bla Bla"...then again, I was alwfully plastered and splattered by mid-show, let's not forget)...along side a handful o' covers (sung oddly in English)...
I have to admit the Black Lips comparisons make sense but no-shit-show, it's Black Lips à la Live at the Jam Club-style, though many of Davila 666's recordin's fall close to the 200 Million Thousand-stripe...& really that ain't fair to Davila 666, cuz thru what could be aped American punk sounds and sights, they channel it all blown out thru their Caribbean-cultured lense...& that's what is magical about this groop...garagepunk just ever so slightly off-center and bright...beautiful, baby

Bored as a piece o' wood at work today brings be back to my eternal search fer "Louie Louie" phenomenons...skippin' & skimmin' thru all the internets I fell on this version by a latin soul group from the late '60s lovingly labeled as the Lat-Teens...nice! (lil' shing-a-ling anyone?)

I'm a bit stunned by this one, kids, as it neither falls into the real raucous nor ruinous categories...but it gave me a swig of "Louie" refreshment, so can't say this number don't hold water...it's a bit of the mild salsa, cha-cha and I have little info to back any of this up other than what wild wisdom is over at Funky 16 Corners (specifically Larry Grogan's 'Soul With An African Twist' article)...

This is a shock--one foot in a puddle, lightnin' strike shock, baby...I really dig Caribbean music and this "Louie" may be a new lynch-pin in my love and lunacy fer this song...I'm comin' to terms with my out and out swoon fer '60s ska (and most all other close musical cousins) and now that my eyes are open I can see thru the Bermuda Triangle of musical twists and turns of my life and, if I squint just right, what it was Richard Berry ("Louie Louie" originator, natch) saw & heard in that dah-dah-dah. da-dah. a long time ago...

In the annals of bad comedies ya'd be wise to not suffer thru the embarrassment of the 1953 flick, the Caddy. Even starrin' the marvelous movie-moronic-duo, Dean Martin & Jerry Lewis (and poor Donna Reed hangin' on fer mercy), this picture could not and would not be saved by any amount of totaled talent...so why bother bringin' it up?
Well the highlight here kids is a hilarious "blooper" reel of Martin & Lewis yukkin' it up with dirty mouths durin' what I'm sure even they were aware was a pointless promo spot fer a failure of a flick...but what came outta this session is the real comedy chemistry between these two entertainment-ville elites & a real gone laff-fest! thee Crucials - Give Me...A Keg...Of Beer

* Full Disclaimer: I got mentioned in the liner notes ...what fer, I ain't quite sure...maybe they knew I'd review their album and give it a glowin' write-up...actually maybe just cuz me & Shake are buds...let's not harp on this, kids...I partied too hardy last nite and I just need to listen to Give Me... & get my head on straight...

Now that I got that outta the way, the review:

Rabid rockers and frantic, full-on fits of garage goodness...thee Crucials did an amazin' job of capturin' their live likeness on this, their first long-play album on Kaiser Records. The record spreads a pretty wide swath of party pounders, some brand new and some tried-and-true tunes...and we're all lucky that the band known fer crazed live shows could actually get this insanity down on record...no easy feat I'm pos-i-tive, baby.

What thee Crucials have here fer the years are not only some of the catchiest choruses and licks but tunes that demand not only the attention of yer head, but mo' importantly to me, yer feet! I wish more bands had the wherewithal to keep it fun (but not overly silly)...this band's album continues the time honored tradition of acknowledgin' "what they doin' ain't got no soul...gonna show ya how to rock'n'roll"...it shakes, it stomps, it sears yer ears!

There's a lil something fer all the garage fiends: fuzz-busters like "Crucials Are Go!" & "She Loves Her, Yeah", open-heart, loud lovesongs like "Doe Eyes" & "Now You Gotta Break My Heart", plus simple shindig starters such as "Can't Sit Still", "You Ain't the One" & "Squares Beware"...A total listenin' experience to lose yer mind, baby...dig it!

I'm also ecstatic & proud that upon multiple listens it's clear that thee Crucials are takin' back the title of "frat-party fracus" music from the grips of mainstream morons...y'all can file this swell LP in with Paul Revere, Sam the Sham, the Woggles, & the Untamed Youth, not that DMB gar-bage!

You need this one, kids...at least two copies cuz yer gonna wear out the first one, guaranteed!!

Memphis Meltdown: CoCoComa, Perfect Fits, Lover!

While the whole excuse fer the Memphis trek was to witness the reunion of the Gories and the Oblivians, I got a bombshell of beautiful news right before we set sail west...the afternoon followin' the first show a mini garagepunk fest was to take place at Murphy's...headlined by easily the wildest gem in the current Goner line-up, CoCoComa!

Crazy! -Let me say that their 2007 self-titled release was an instant classic...frantic to the third degree, baby...And with hooks galore...flipped my wig again & again, but with their HQ in Chi-town, I figured I never had a shot catchin' 'em down my way...

Zing! I got the golden ticket, with thee chance to finally see 'em do it to it live!! So, back to the show, right...well we got there a bit behind schedule and only caught the tail end of the Magic Kids...from what I saw I wish I coulda seen more! ...almost a bizarro Beach Boys on a Black Lips kick...

Then came the famed Lover! (honestly I don't give a rats ass about their punk pedigree of ex-Lost Sounds, Reigning Sound members) and fer a power pop groop, well they powered up that pop real nice...not always my bag but good time all the same (til the obnoxious guitar solos spoiled the last few tunes)...

& like a whip crack of thunder the Perfect Fits took to the stage and made a good racket of raw punk pounders...seemed like my gal Anna really dug 'em and I can understand why...cuz their breed of bonzo punk is a bit catchy too...so let's give to 'em huh?...

But really I was all butterscotch butterflies inside waitin' fer my throbs to start shakin' it...I was a bit miffed to see the two new members joinin' the husband/wife duo of Bill & Lisa...they ripped as a trio with their original organist wailin' away...but after the first song...Whoa-dad! I could dig it!! ...playin' almost entirely new tunes, CoCoComa went completely unhinged with breakneck garagepunk rockers! No ballads here kiddies...just blaster after blaster...I just lost it! ...Fer a minute I couldn't tell if I was dancin' or havin' a psychotic fit, but goddamn were they capital-f Fun! ...I screamed fer an encore and like hell they blared through two classic tunes (both personal favs of mine) to cap off the show right...

Even bought a t-shirt after the show (& I ain't much of a band shirt wearin' kinda cat, ya dig) and shared a few words of worship with Bill...all I can say is that band can ball! Definitely catch 'em if ya can!

Memphis Meltdown: Gories, Oblivians Reunion 2009

It's been 15 years...yeppers, a decade and a half since the Gories and ten years since the Oblivians graced a stage...I wasn't there in that original heady time of the modern garage slop story...but I am no longer left behind...improbably that time came again & I was lucky enuf to witness it...

Now reunion shows on the whole taste like sour milk to me, but this was the Gories and the Oblivians sharin' the sweet spotlight...in grimy garage-ville wildspot: Memphis, TN ...& I still ain't stop shakin'!

The novel plan was to only catch the first nite of a two-niter that kicked off their joint-reunion, grand world tour...& holy fuck was that a magical nite...so much so that fuck-me-runnin' if we didn't go fer round two the next nite...

As fer the show itself...well can ya say "HOT"?!? Both figuratively and literally...the venue was a goddamn sauna and both groups were on fire, baby...
To be fair the Gories opened both nites and yeah, Mick's voice sounded a bit on the pre-pubescent side and the band at times a smidge wonky, but what I heard was the heart of the Gories, bleedin' and bouncin' all over the place...Dan a wailin', Peg keepin' it poundin' and Mick just gettin' it...just great to these ears!
Then each nite the Oblivians swooped in fer the kill...like they never missed a beat (& I'm willin' to wager they did I bit mo' of the pre-tour practicin' to boot)...Frantic bulldozers couldn't hold a candle to Greg, Eric, & Jack's sonic sweeping-force...seein' 'em in full rotation (with a added bonus of Mr. Quintron joinin' the band fer the last few numbers on the second nite -- wowzers!)...well kids, some folks go to church to get right with god...doesn't get much mo' spiritual fer me than that sweaty nite at the Hi Tone...

...My mind is still rattlin' around in my noggin here several days later as I write this scrawl...let me just wrap up before it blows...if there are any doubts about garage-greats from the early-ninties & whether they can still knock it out...the Gories & (especially) the Oblivians solid gots it, baby, and they hit the fucker straight outta sight.

& that's how a reunions show's supposed to go?....

The man and the myth that was Lux Interior is no mo'
The Cramps are responsible for my taste in trash ...I don't wanna even think about a world without 'em ...and Lux was the drivin' force (along with the lovely Poison Ivy) in gettin' sleazy sounds to a wider audience (just listen to any of the early Cramps records and hear the great garbage that they "borrowed" from)

Real glad I got to see 'em live a few years back in Asheville, NC...mad that I only got to see 'em once...

R.I.P. Lux (1946-2009) ...Stay Sleazy ...Where ever ya are....

& my thoughts go out to Posion Ivy.

Fuckin' sad...

P.S. The only band sticker on the back o' my car...well I'll give ya three guesses....

A Real Live Wire: Greg Cartwright at the Whig

So last nite I caught a bit of garage-rock history--the return to Cola-town, SC by the great Greg Cartwright!

They said it couldn't be done, but Greg found it in him to take another stab at SC's capital city that let him down some years back with a disappointing Compulsive Gamblers show (ain't gonna spew any details on this as I wasn't there either)...Goddammit, I'm not sure who or what talked him into the show, but we were beyond treated to a stellar performance from a sick and injured (he had broken a toe the day before) ex-Oblivian...

I wasn't sure about a Greg "one man band", but sans any percussion or musical gimmicks this man tore it up in a way one man shouldn't be capable of, baby. I dig most of Greg's tunes over the many band manifestations, but seein' him do it to it, live, just him and a guitar, proves to me not only how fuckin' excellent he is as a songwriter but more over as a performer as his originals and cover tunes just ooze Cartwright-ness...the man is the music...

After a wow-arama of a live performance that included just about every song I shouted out at the poor man in addition to my shittily-screamed backup vocals (not at his request, snicker), Greg then tirelessly hit the turntables with local DJ Sindoolah to provide a memorable dance party from Greg's mighty 7" collection...I mean fuckin' gem after gem of goodness...R&B, blues, rock, and everything inbetween got the kids at the Whig a-goin'....I ain't shook so hard on a dance floor in a while and it was the perfect follow-up to such an impressive show, givin' everyone a peek into what moves Mr. Cartwright......whoaaaa, I'm still realin' almost 24 hours later, kids.

Just before I left Greg made the effort to thank me personally fer comin' out and enjoyin' the show (was I that obvious...'natch)...all I could say to one of my musically idols:
"I really dug it...thanks fer comin' to Cola-town...and please come back...soon!"

Fingers crossed.

Rock'N'Roll Monkey and the Robots - Back to Beatsville

A happy fun-time album just over a half hour, Back to Beatsville goes fer kitschy and post-modern and gets away with it in spades, my friends...shakin' lots outta the garage rock tree but unafraid to whip it with machines fer the real strange fruit, Rock'N'Roll Monkey and the Robots are a party group...can we say this group owes a serious debt to the Cramps (I can dig it, baby) and just about every rock group just out fer kicks (read: none of that "serious music" garbage)...gots to say this group's originality is growin' on me (& that's a lot comin' from this here slop-snob, kids, as I ain't typically a fan of this stripe of style) and worth multiple spins on yer hi-fi...highlites are "We Want to Hear You Howl", "Time Machine", "Zombie Attack!", and "Do the Rock'N'Roll Monkey"...really kids, do the Rock'N'Roll Monkey!

A Real Live Wire: thee Crucials & Rob the Throb at Ernesto's House

Let me begin with sayin' that there's no greater venue than a trashed house party and goddammit Ernesto's pad is always a good time, live music or not.

After Plundershop paved the way early in the evening fer the main attractions with a freak-out set-ender, Rob the Throb set-up fer a one man band throw down (my 1st time seein' this kid live). Even sick, as Mr. Throb reminded us the whole nite (hahaha Rob!), his one-two beat sound pounded the crowd and he took my loud-mouth antagonism the entire show ("THROBBINNNN'")...amateur guitar work be damned, the kids dug it and here's hopin' Rob continues down the garage-blues-slop road...

And without most of the kids knowing what was about to hit 'em, thee Crucials took the "stage" and immediately proved why they are the second comin' of a garagerock frat party gone horribly psychotic...the floor literally shook, shit was broken, lead singer Shake danced on amps and the crowd just danced even harder right back ....the kids went completely nuts-zoid and rock'n'roll was reborn fer me again...fuck yeah, that's why I dig this trash! & I gots a badly bruised tambourine hand to prove it!!!

Keg floatin' & house destroyed, thee Crucials left triumphant...

Damn, I love house parties.

Memphis Blues

Yeah, just last week I made the trip to my Mecca: Memphis, Tennessee

First thoughts on Memphis while I was there: Wow, this town has gotten commercialized and gentrified ...Sad.

Thoughts once I returned home: Wow, that was still a fuckin' kickin' trip and a cool town...when can I go back!?!

So I finally got to go to Goner Records (and meet proprietor Eric Oblivian!) ...got inked at Underground Art (picture to come soon) ...passed through the music museums (Sun, Stax, & the Rock'n'Soul) ...'course I toured the infamous Graceland (blah ...any soul left of Elvis' legacy is gone now) ...and sleazed it up on schlocky Beale Street (damn this is a real tragedy ...a fuckin' tourist trap now) and got trashy (read: trashed!) in Mid-town bars

...in summation: Had a Blast!

Long Live Memphis!
