Once Again Car-free & Care-free, baby...

Late breaking news from last weekend: an interstate wreck steals our only wheels, so I'm back on solely my heels, baby (don't worry, everybody magically survived with nary a bump, though sadly the same can't be said of the automobile)...once again livin' the life I sing about in my songs and can proudly say "car-free and care-free"!

Oh and least I forget, thee Knee Jerks will be bringin' a bus-load of outta control cray-zay once more to the adorin' Art Bar...we open up the party flood gates at eight so don't be late...after us are three bands, includin' the cool Capital City Playboys long awaited stage return of their brand of rockabilly burn...as always get hip and come give us a sip!

thee Knee Jerks: First the Station, Then the Stage

Now this is the sort of double-booking a beat combo begs to be a part of, baby...

First off thee Knee Jerks prime the pump with some wild live radio fun, on crazy WUSC...tune yer dials today around 4pm to the Columbia Beet and prepare yer earholes for the improbable and implausible sounds via radiowaves that just won't behave!

Then in quick order hitch it over to the finest dive in all of West Cola, where we'll be appearin' again live but this time in-person even, at New Brookland Tavern...we'll be twitchin' & twistin' along with T.C. Costello, Buck Stanley and the Wage Slaves...scoot the boot and as always, squares beware!

Normcore?

When I first heard about Normcore, which is supposedly some sort of flimsy excuse fer a fashion trend, the image of Norm from classic sitcom 'Cheers' instantly came to mind...sadly as I came to find out, Mr. Peterson holdin' up the better part of bar had absolutely nothing to do with it...I think they missed a golden opportunity, baby (well everybody but this cat)...cheers!

thee Knee Jerks tonight alright!

...straight outta the Free Times, baby:

Thee Knee Jerks, Dreiberg — Take members from the likes of the Get Wets, Gravitron and Sons of Young, and you’re bound to come up with some kind of party. In local terms, thee Knee Jerks take the garage-punk throne just vacated by the now-defunct Unawares and inject some humor and hubris. Dreiberg also include an ex-Sons of Young member in drummer Brett Wider, but Rich Owensby’s songs hew to a more conventional alt-rock style. With Release the Dog and Lost Wages. — Kevin Oliver

Art Bar: 9 p.m., $5

Short And Sweet

Top 5 Songs from the 1960s Under 2 Minutes

It’s understandable that today’s pop culture could be a reaction to the hustle and bustle of modern life. And with so many competing sounds seeking our short attention spans, maybe I long for a less long-winded popular music world in particular. Maybe this also warrants why I dig what could be considered the highwater mark in popular music: the 1960s. Some say the 1960s was a simpler time—here's five pop songs that suggest it may have been a shorter time too.

“Stay” by Maurice Williams & the Zodiacs (1960) - 1:50

Aside from being an instant hit (and the original version being recorded in the town I call home: Columbia, South Carolina), it’s every lusty teenager’s urgent request so we can all relate. The infectious falsetto accompanying Maurice’s swiftly sound argument keeps us spinning this song until we agree to his plea.

“Hawaii” by the Beach Boys (1963) - 1:59

A lesser known gem from the genius of Brian Wilson and Mike Love barely makes the cut at just under 120 seconds. A song that sends us promptly on a pacific-island, surf getaway that (though the song itself is short) we probably wished would last forever.

“She Said Yeah” by the Rolling Stones (1965) - 1:34

The only cover on this list (originally recorded by the real rhythm & blues brother Larry Williams) also happens to hold the title of shortest song here. The Stones rollick through this succinct exclamation at just the right speed to get stuck in your head long after the last guitar lick.

“the Letter” by the Box Tops (1967) - 1:58

Another tune sliding in like express mail just under the two-minute mark. Sung by a sweet sixteen Alex Chilton, it’s a song of not-so-quiet desperation to return posthaste to a chick that can’t be bothered to wait a second longer.

“Why Don’t We Do It In The Road” by the Beatles (1968) - 1:42

An awfully long title for a tune so short and salacious...and probably the only Paul McCartney tune I’ll admit to digging. This repetitive romp gets to the point and arguably ends within the amount of time carnal success in the streets should take.

Another year older, baby...

Oblivians "I'll Be Gone"

"There ain't no way to know, how life will treat you so, let's rock'n'roll as we get old..." Another year older but it sure beats the alternative, baby...& had some pretty happenin' events hip me this past year: finally landed that faculty librarian gig & took my first swing teachin' at the uni

Curtis Mayfield "Move On Up"

to top it all off with a cherry, I joined a new garagepunk beat combo (details once we finally decide on a numbskull name)...all that said, I remain a librarian by day and libertine by nite, and as always the squares best beware!
